Elevate Your Look

Brow Lift at James Rough, M.D. Plastic Surgery

Aging, gravity, and repeated facial expressions can cause the brow and forehead skin to droop over time. This can result in sagging eyebrows, frown lines, and forehead wrinkles that make you appear tired, stressed, or older than you feel. A brow lift, also known as a forehead lift, is a cosmetic surgery procedure that raises the brow and forehead tissues, smooths wrinkles, and restores the eyebrows to a more youthful position.

At James Rough, M.D. Plastic Surgery, Dr. Rough specializes in advanced brow lift techniques, including the endoscopic brow lift, temporal brow lift, coronal brow lift, and direct brow lift, to deliver natural-looking results tailored to your facial anatomy. A brow lift procedure may also be combined with upper blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery) for comprehensive eye and forehead rejuvenation.

What Is a Brow Lift?

The Upper Third of Facial Rejuvenation

Brow lift surgery (also called a forehead lift or surgical brow lift) is a plastic surgery procedure that repositions the brow muscles and soft tissues, removes excess skin or excess tissue, and restores the eyebrows to a more youthful position. This helps correct:

  • Sagging brows or brow ptosis that create heaviness over the eyes
  • Deep lines and frown lines between the eyebrows
  • Horizontal forehead wrinkles from repeated movement and aging
  • Drooping eyebrows that hide the upper eyelids and cause functional issues

By addressing the underlying muscles and tissues, the brow lift procedure creates smoother forehead skin, reduces wrinkles, and provides a refreshed appearance.

Types of Brow Lift Procedures

The brow lift procedure is performed on an outpatient basis using general anesthesia or local anesthesia and sedation. Patients return home the same day with follow-up appointments scheduled and an aftercare plan in place.

Dr. Rough tailors each brow lift to the patient’s anatomy, goals, and severity of sagging. Options include:

  • Endoscopic Brow Lift: Uses small incision sites placed behind the hairline. A tiny camera is inserted to adjust the underlying tissues and brow muscles. This minimally invasive brow lift technique creates minimal scarring and offers a quicker recovery.
  • Temporal Brow Lift (Temporal Brow): A limited cosmetic procedure that lifts the outer brow and forehead skin. Often combined with an upper eyelid lift (blepharoplasty procedure) for natural rejuvenation.
  • Coronal Brow Lift (Open Brow Lift): Involves a coronal incision across the scalp, hidden in the hairline. Best for patients with significant sagging brows or forehead wrinkles.
  • Direct Brow Lift: A surgical procedure where excess skin is removed directly above the eyebrows. Typically performed for uneven brows or when more direct correction of brow droop is needed.

When It’s Time for a Lift

Am I a Candidate for a Brow Lift?

You may be a good candidate if you:

  • Have sagging brows, frown lines, or forehead wrinkles that affect your appearance
  • Notice brow droop or brow ptosis that causes hooding of the upper eyelids
  • Are in good health, without uncontrolled medical conditions that impair healing
  • Do not smoke, or are willing to quit before and after surgery
  • Have realistic expectations about brow lift results

What to Expect

Brow Lift Recovery

Following brow lift surgery, expect swelling and bruising around the forehead and eyes for 7–10 days. Keeping your head elevated and applying cold compresses will help reduce swelling and minimize discomfort. Light activities can resume in about 1 week. Dr. Rough will advise you on when it’s safe to resume more strenuous activities like working out.

The brow lift incision sites are typically hidden behind the hairline, and as the incisions heal, scars become barely visible. Temporary tightness, numbness, or mild discomfort are common but well managed with prescribed pain medication. Dr. Rough will check your healing at follow-up appointments and remain fully available to offer extra support throughout your entire recovery.

Restore Confidence & Balance

Brow Lift Results

A brow lift creates a more refreshed, youthful look by elevating the brows and smoothing lines across the forehead. Many patients notice immediate improvement in facial expression, with reduced frown lines and a lighter, more open appearance around the eyes. As swelling subsides over the first few weeks, the final results become more defined.

Brow lift results typically last 10 years or longer. While aging continues, the lifted brow position and smoother contours help maintain a naturally rejuvenated look for years. With proper skincare and sun protection, many patients enjoy long-term benefits.

Frequently Asked Questions

The cost of a brow lift varies depending on the technique (endoscopic, temporal, coronal, or direct) and whether it’s combined with other procedures. Costs are reviewed during your consultation.

Most incisions are hidden behind the hairline or in natural creases. With proper healing, scars are minimal and fade over time.

Most patients feel comfortable in 1–2 weeks, though subtle healing continues for several months.

While injectable neuromodulators like Botox and Dysport can temporarily soften forehead wrinkles, a nonsurgical brow lift cannot reposition sagging brows or remove excess skin. A surgical brow lift provides long-lasting results.

Yes. Many patients combine a brow lift with upper blepharoplasty, eyelid surgery, or facelift procedures for comprehensive rejuvenation.
